One summer afternoon, the narrator sits down to compare the catalogues of two museums that hold the same work by Alejandro Kuropatwa. The surprise comes when he realizes that the images are mirror reversals of one another: the same elements that appear on the right in the reproduction published by the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes appear on the left in the reproduction published by the Museo de Arte Moderno.
Over the next five years, the narrator keeps a research diary. Are the works held by the two museums reversed as well? How many original copies of that particular photograph exist? What is the correct way to copy a photograph? What are the implications of altering the way a work is installed? These questions extend to ideas of originality, the institutional and patrimonial status of artworks, artists’ intentions, and the dynamics of the art world. Obsession, then, becomes a flashlight with which to confront the mystery.
